“One of the distinguishing characteristics of a progressive nation and people is the ability to learn, to modify positions and to advance to newer and more progressive points of departure. - Nelson Mandela, former President of the Republic of South Africa.

As we celebrate Mandela Day, we celebrate a man of progress. A symbol for human progress, equality and dignity. He was man who inspired Africa. Inspired the world. And today he continues to affirm our commitment to making progress real and creating shared value for Africa and its people.

Constantly raising the bar and being proactive, no matter the challenge, is key to our purpose of unlocking potential and enabling growth in Africa. We also humbly acknowledge that we are not alone in moving Africa forward. In empowering progress in Africa, the partnerships we forge continue to be a key driver in creating sustainable social and economic development.

Partnerships, like the one with Tech Mahindra, where we launched a Data-Science and Analytics graduate programme. “By developing a broad and deep pipeline of data-science skills across the continent, we are aiming to be a key knowledge source and provider of data-analytics on the continent. While this supports our digitisation and customer-centric vision, it also demonstrates our commitment to leveraging human potential through the development of valuable business skills that actively transform a sector with the potential to drive Africa’s growth,” says Thula Ngonyama, Standard Bank Head of Customer Insights for Africa. Learn more about how we launched skills pipeline to kick start Africa's data science.

Africa's progress is our progress

  • Our post graduate UK scholarship  programme is offering the best and brightest African students the opportunity to study in disciplines ranging from medicine and technology to African development and education, creating a community of people who share inspiration for Africa.
  • Similarly, the launch of our business incubators aims to educate, empower and develop a thriving community of African entrepreneurs. Reaching out to small business owners through our networking events is helping them connect to the mentorship and guidance they need to grow their business. These are  supported by training initiatives like our partnership with Google to offer digital skills training to the youth and SME owners to promote economic advancement in Nigeria.
  • In addressing and advancing social causes, Standard Bank Malawi hosted the first-ever Socio-Economic Development Forum in partnership with the Malawi government and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Forums like these are helping make progress real for youth development in Africa.
  • Helping power Africa for long-term growth by supporting renewable energy solutions like Uganda’s Karuma hydroelectric power plant is how we are creating value for the environment in which we operate and the people we serve.

As one of Africa's largst bank by assetts, we remain firm in our commitment to drive long term and inclusive growth in Africa. We will do this with perseverance, passion and always, in the spirit of progress.
