Jacko Maree receives lifetime achievement award
Standard Bank Team
Super Contributor

Congratulations to our colleague Jacko Maree who was honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to banking. Jacko's banking career spans more than 32 years. Of these, Jacko was Chief Executive of Standard Bank Group for 13. The Banker magazine presented the award to Jacko in London last night.

The Lifetime Achievement award is not made every year. The award is decided by an editorial committee to a person who has made a substantial contribution to banking over the course of a career. Previous winners have been William Rhodes, Citigroup and Michel Pebereau, BNP Paribas.

Jacko said last night that this accolade is not so much about his achievements "but rather recognition of the stability, soundness and growth of South Africa’s financial system over many years, as well as an acknowledgement of Standard Bank’s successes in the rest of Africa".

Brian Caplen, editor of The Banker, said the award is in recognition of his long career at Standard Bank Group and in his role as Chief Executive since 1999 in "building the bank from a domestic South African bank into a formidable regional player".

Jacko's career at Standard Bank Group started in 1980. So far, he has received numerous peer accolades and awards. In 2005 he was named The Sunday Times Business Leader of the Year. He was also voted by his peers as Moneyweb’s CEO of The Year in 2005 and again in 2006.

For three consecutive years, 2007, 2008 and 2009, he was voted “The Most Trusted CEO in South Africa” by Ask Africa’s annual Trust Barometer study.

In 2010 the Financial Times named Mr Maree as one of the 50 emerging market business leaders who have helped shape the economic performance of their respective region. In 2012, Forbes Magazine named Mr Maree as one of the 20 most powerful people in African business.
