Looking out for Africa
Standard Bank Team
Super Contributor

As a leading emerging market bank, the Standard Bank Group proudly celebrates Africa Day.

Africa Day takes place on 25 May each year, marking the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May in 1963. In many African countries it is celebrated as a public holiday. This year’s theme is ‘Africa, taking ownership: Success and Challenges’.

The establishment of the OAU gave significant impetus to the continent’s collective struggle for independence and, since then, African states have stood united in their quest for socio-economic development and political stability for the people of Africa.

Standard Bank Group’s history in Africa began in 1846 in Port Elizabeth, on South Africa’s south east coastline. We operate in 18 African countries, including South Africa, where our head quarters are based in Johannesburg. Today, we employ nearly 54 000 people across Africa.

At Standard Bank Group we have demonstrated an understanding of local conditions, cultures and market drivers in each African country in which we do business. This has underpinned our success in Africa and other emerging markets.

We are successfully uniting commercial opportunity with social and environmental responsibility in each country in Africa, and making a difference in the communities within which we operate throughout Africa.
