In 2016, currently 52% of South Africans are 25 or younger, meaning that we should have a prosperous future with enough people to power the economy. Yet, our current youth unemployment rate is at 63.1% - including graduates; putting stress on families, the economy and our youth. Undoubtedly, this situation demands action that can’t be left to the government alone, determined efforts are also needed from the financial services industry, business, and private individuals. That’s why this year, we’ll be launching theStandard Bank Youth Expo.
A combination of a career exhibition and youth empowerment conference, our Youth Expo will help young people realise the opportunities that exist and that businesses want to assist with practical advice, financial assistance, career guidance and helpful tools. Insights will also be given on various industries such as; media and entertainment, business and entrepreneurship, finance and accounting, as well as technology and innovation.
During the expo, various companies will highlight the opportunities available and leading educational institutions will be offering advice and study opportunities to younger attendees. We want to attract young people from high schools and tertiary institutions and offer them access to a broad platform. Another objective we have is to raise R3 million through thePay It Forward Fund; where public and private individuals can assist deserving young people enter universities or other tertiary institutions, by donating any amount they see fit.
The inaugural Standard Bank Youth Expo will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre on 6 and 7 August. We look forward to seeing you there, to attend all you have to do is register here.
