Lol - At least the miners still have a sense of humor. Quite a bit of money for unskilled uneducated labour.

This is getting better...an extract from the following article "The ministry said Mr Malema was on a campaign to make South Africa ungovernable."! What a laugh given their (ANC) history, witnessed most recently in the Western Cape. Who needs Monty Python? http://www.bdlive.co.za/national/politics/2012/09/13/malemas-renegade-run-troubles-the-anc

'"We only want R12000 for rock-drill operators and a minimum wage of R7500 for everyone working underground," he said. Madiba said the strikers would meet today to decide what to do next. All they wanted, he said, was to be able to create a better future for their children back home."(Times)

The mining industry in SA has always employed more people to produce the same unit (ton of gold, platinum, whatever) in comparison with the rest of the world. What is the bet that mechanised mining will become the catchword in future. More mechanisation, less workers, more profit..

Saw a strike leader interviewed on BBC. His solution? Nationalise mines, reduce hours in working week so reducing supply. This will lead to increase in Platinum price and mines will be able to afford to pay miners R12500.

IMO these guys are getting paid a fair wage, yes there maybe an element of danger to the job, but besides that one does not need any sort of education to do that work. in yesterday Mercury there's a picture of 10000 people applying for 30 posts. In a way the mines are creating their own problem as they could mechanise more, but is it not employment of the still millions of poorly educated that we want?

the sad reality of that strike leader's argument is that there is nothing wrong with the financial rationale. History has proven time and time again, when you have a huge disparity between haves and have-nots, revolutions result. And quite honestly, it is the nature of capitalism that the haves benefit when the have nots are paid minimum wage
