AFCON: Africa is the champion
Standard Bank Team
Super Contributor

On 19 January, football teams and their fans from 16 African countries gathered at the southern tip of Africa to compete in the Orange Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa 2013. Standard Bank Group was proud to be one of the sponsors of this event.

Although Nigeria took the trophy at the final played this past weekend, it is the millions of fans across Africa who are the winners, as they supported the teams throughout the competition .

The excitement started back in October 2012 when the AFCON Trophy Tour (sponsored by Standard Bank Group) made its way around Africa, including the host country, South Africa. The tour gave fans a chance to meet the football ambassadors and have a photo of themselves taken with the grand trophy.

At the same time, the search started for the official player escourts, which were also sponsored by Standard Bank Group. What a sight it was seeing the children standing proud in front of each of the players before every match. The children came from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Ghana. This opportunity gave these budding football stars and young enthusiasts a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take to the pitch with their heroes. Who knows, among them may be Africa’s future football stars.

The 30th Africa Cup of Nations tournament is scheduled to take place in 2015 in Morocco.
