Adopt-a-School helps young South Africans reach their dreams

How do we give back to the communities in which our customers and staff live?

At Standard Bank Group, we believe that a solid education is one of the most important ways a community can move forward. Which is why we invest in South Africa’s future by focusing on supporting education. One way we do this is by making money available to various schools that need it to make a difference to the community is serves.

All too often, top-performing learners from under-resourced schools do not get the chance to pursue tertiary studies. They miss the opportunity to embark on rewarding and challenging careers and the country fails to benefit from the talent of some of its most brilliant young minds.

In an effort to give these students - whose overall Grade 12 pass rates were between 83% and 92%, a chance at a better life - we’ve offered 31 students scholarships to study further in the field of their choice.

These fields range from veterinary to actuarial science, to medicine and accounting and our scholarship recipients study at some of South Africa’s foremost universities through our Adopt-A-School scholarship programme.

We adopted 114 schools under the Adopt-a-School initiative. These 114 were chosen from a potential 500 of the Dinaledi schools that government have earmarked as centres of excellence in mathematics and science.

Under Standard Bank Group’s partnership with South Africa’s Department of Basic Education, we have adopted 1 145 schools and invested a significant amount in helping participating schools become centres of excellence in mathematics and science, increasing the number of learners passing these subjects in Grade 12.
