Children are the future and each has the right to grow to realise their full potential. With this in mind, the development of the R1-billion Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, is a step closer to completion.

Commencing in 2014, the construction of the state-of-the-art specialist facility is set to be completed in December 2016, and will serve and bring hope to children throughout southern Africa.

Currently, there are only four specialist children’s hospitals in Africa – compared to 19 in Australia and 20 in Germany alone. Yet our continent Africa is one that faces the most pressing need for paediatric care. According to UNICEF, children in sub-Saharan Africa face a high risk of death from treatable diseases in the first month of life, and it is one of the regions showing the least progress.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust will help to remedy the unfortunate situation somewhat by treating those children whose ailments escalate past the scope of primary healthcare. The new facility will be a specialised paediatric hospital featuring centres of excellence for haematology, oncology, pulmonology, cardiology, craniofacial and general paediatric surgery. It will have between 200 and 300 beds.

The academic platform for these various disciplines will be overseen by the University of the Witwatersrand, ensuring world-class standards that will retain and attract the best medical minds.

Currently, R790-million has been donated to the hospital, a cause that, according to Chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust Graça Machel, will change the landscape for children’s specialist medical treatment across Africa. Yet there is more to be done, and the partners encourage the private sector and individuals to support progress in securing a vibrant, secure future for our continent.
