Celebrate school rugby with Standard Bank and Grey High School.

One thing that always brightens our mood despite the dreary autumn weather is the Standard Bank Grey High School Rugby Festival. This is set to be another exciting celebration of schoolboy rugby, but bigger than the years before.

In association with Powerade and supported by AlgoaFM, the festival will take place on 28 and 30 August in PE. The teams will met up at the Grey High School campus as they’ve done in previous years, but there is one notable difference: the organisers upped the number of invitations making this festival bigger and better than before. All in all, 1 674 players and around 300 officials will be part of the tournament – that’s 81 teams, including 28 First XVs.

Johannesburg teams Jeppe and St John’s will be attending, as well as a number of schools from the Durban and Border regions. There will also be a large number of schools from the Eastern Cape –Grahamstown, Uitenhage and several PE township sides. With the inclusion of u14, u15, u16 and second teams, players are gearing up for stiff competition between rivals.

Grey High School is proud to be associated with Standard Bank and thankful for the renewal of the festival sponsorship. According to the school’s rector, Chris Erasmus, our brands are perfectly synced and there is a good synergy between us.

“Although the sponsorship is for the festival weekend, the awareness of the partnership throughout the year on campus reminds us that both brands share the same founding forefather in John Paterson, who established both The Grey Institute and Standard Bank in Port Elizabeth in the 1800s,” he says.

Springbok flank, Siya Kolisi, says that the festival has a wonderful atmosphere for spectators and, as a player, it was an ideal opportunity, in the past, to compare himself against the best players from other schools.

Surprisingly, the Standard Bank Grey High School Rugby Festival is not all about rugby – it’s about team building and friendship a lot of the time. The boys are able to socialise and make new friends, while coaches catch up with each other and enjoy the camaraderie. For less serious rugby fans just looking for a fun day out, there will be plenty of festivities off the field, including giant jumping castles, food stalls, a beer garden, live music at the end of the day and much more.
