Celebrating 20 years in Botswana
Standard Bank Team
Super Contributor

Botswana is a country famous for its wildlife, diamond mining and tourism and is known as being the most robust country on the African continent, politically and economically.

Being a country with one of Africa’s most advanced banking systems, Stanbic Bank Botswana is proudly a part of this and celebrates its 20th anniversary. With a historical connection to the Standard Bank Group going as far back as the 1890s, back then, the Bechuanaland Protectorate administration and a number of traders in the area held bank accounts at Standard Bank Group’s Mafekeng (Mahikeng) branch.

On 17 September 1991 the UnionBank of Botswana was incorporated in Botswana as a subsidiary of Stanbic, now known as Standard Bank Group, and on 2 March 1992, the business started in Gaberone. The bank even still has seven of the 20 people that started with the bank, still working there.

Along with the Botswana banking environment, Stanbic Bank Botswana has grown over the years from one branch when it opened in 1992 to 10 branches, and three more to be added this year. For a bank that only entered the retail space in the last 10 years, it already has 19 ATMs around the country with 10 more planned for this year.

As a banking group founded in Africa 150 years ago, we are proud to share a long association with the people of Botswana.
