We’re proud of the contribution and supportive efforts the Standard Bank Group staff has put into assisting the victims of the Haiti disaster.
Our staff from around the world made donations totaling to nearly R500 000. Standard Bank Group will match this sum, which means we will be giving R1-million (R800 000 to the Red Cross and R200 000 to Unicef) to this cause. Included in this amount is the N$60 000 donated to the Namibian Red Cross by staff from Standard Bank Namibia.
Besides that, we had colleagues who gave their time to go to Haiti to assist in rescue efforts. One was Wynand Pretorius, from our IT team at head office in Johannesburg, South Africa. He left for Haiti within hours of hearing about the devastating earthquake that happened in January.
He was part of a 40-strong South African team of highly skilled rescuers, including doctors, paramedics, engineers and three dogs. “Long, hard and emotional,” is how Wynand describes the time he spent on this rescue mission. He goes on to say: “I’d do it all again.”
