Climate change is affecting the world as we know it.
But although reducing greenhouse gas emissions helps reduce the effects of climate change, we must also prepare for the impacts that our past emissions have made.
Over the past few years, global negotiations have been taking place to discuss the future of our planet. Nations from around the world have been meeting at the Conference of Parties (COP) to come to agreements about the reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions.
The 17th COP will take place at the end of this month in Durban, which is a great honour but also a huge responsibility for South Africa.
From 28 November to 9 December, an estimated 20 000 to 30 000 people from more than 190 nations will arrive at and attend the conference.
Everyone will be watching to see whether we can once again deliver a world-class mega-event and also to see if Durban will be the city where concrete outcomes are reached in the ongoing emissions negotiations.
