116 hernia surgeons from all over the world embarked on Windhoek for the 7th International Endohernia Society (IEHS) conference held on the 22 – 26 October 2013. Surgeons from The United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany, India, Sweden, Denmark, China and regional SADC countries South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana all attended the 5 day conference where we (SBN) sponsored N$35 000 towards bringing the surgeons to Namibia.

This was the first time that such a conference had taken place on the African continent never mind Namibia. During the conference doctors conducted live hernia surgeries on patients at the Katutura State Hospital and the Roman Catholic Hospital. Surgeons also conducted lectures at the University of Namibia’s School of Medicine and shared knowledge and work expertise on laparoscopic hernia repair and treatment of inguinal hernias.

Hernia or rupture is a medical term which refers to a protrusion of a tissue through a structure or part of an organ. A hernia most commonly occurs in the abdomen and requires open surgery with sophisticated medical instruments.

We are proud and happy to say that with our active participation we have helped the International Endohernia Society (IEHS) fulfill its main goal of making endoscopic and laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery more popular in Namibia and the rest of SADC.
