As a long-time champion of youth development and entrepreneurship, the Standard Bank Group offers many initiatives in this regard. The most recent is a progressive partnership between our Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria and leading tech company Google, one that will address key challenges that face burgeoning small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

As Nigeria aims to successfully diversify its economy, the ability of digital technology to empower the population and stimulate small-business growth needs to be emphasised. Accordingly, this joint initiative offers free digital skills training to youth and SME owners to promote economic advancement, highlighting the benefits and value of digital marketing. As a direct consequence, it is hoped that about 1 000 SMEs will be upskilled in one year.

According to Bunmi Banjo, Head of Digital Education at Google Africa, Nigeria is well suited to a digital revolution throughout the spheres of its society; with over 97 million online subscribers, the West African country has one of the highest online populations in the world, presenting big opportunities for the SME and start-up sector.

The training sessions are scheduled to start in Lagos and Kaduna on 19 July, and will, subsequently, be held in seven other states throughout the country.
