Volkswagen’s Polo Vivo was named the overall winner at the 2014 Standard Bank People’s Wheels Awards, held Thursday 21 November 2013 in Johannesburg.
Once again South African motor enthusiasts voted for their most loved car, scoring vehicles on a range of criteria. Looks and styling, interior comfort, noise and vibration levels, build quality, standard features, cargo capacity, driving experience, performance, economy, reliability, safety features, after sales service and ownership costs were all taken into account with various winners in different categories.
From practical and economical to aspirational and luxurious, 30 categories like ‘Adventure Bakkies’, ‘Premium Road Class Warriors’ and ‘Trend Setters’ honoured cars like The Ford Ranger DC, the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz SLK. But it was Volkswagen’s Polo Vivo that came out tops with the most votes cast. Second place went to the Kia Picanto and third place to the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet.
In the Preferred Fuel Brand category, Engen took the gold, followed by BP and Shell. Meanwhile Continental was named Preferred Tyre Brand, followed by Goodyear and Bridegstone.
The awards also acknowledged car brands bought in 2011 that retained their value in 2013. According to Transunion Auto data, the 2011 diesel-driven Evoque 2,2 SD4 Dynamic was worth 80,82% of its original purchase price, while the petrol-fed 2,0 Si4 Dynamic was worth almost as much – 80,81%.
