Banking is the highest regarded industry in South Africa according to the 2013 Top Companies Reputation Index published this week by Mail & Guardian. The index rates the most reputable businesses in the country. Overall, Standard Bank is placed second to Coca-Cola SA and first in Financial Sector category and first in the Banking sub-sector category.

Standard Bank was also seen as the second-most reputable by Facebook users.

Research specialists Plus 94 Research first published the Top Companies Reputation Index in 2001 and in 2012 Standard Bank was placed sixth overall. The index measures nine key qualities from vision and leadership to communication and governance to financial performance. The maximum total score is 100.

In the overall results, Standard Bank scored 89.25 (in 2001 we scored 87.38); in the Financial Sector 89.25; in Banking 89.25; and by Facebook users 89.12. The first and third placed companies in the overall results scored 91.20 and 87.71 respectively.

According to Mail & Guardian (www.mg.co.za) and Plus 94 Research (www.plus94.co.za), the Top Companies Reputation Index aims to help companies understand what people think of them and also to help consumers to get an objective view of the companies from which they buy products and services.

Full results and further insight to the 2013 Top Companies Reputation Index was published as a supplement to the Mail & Guardian’s May 24 to 30 2013 edition.
