Switching off inefficient lights for good
Standard Bank Team
Super Contributor

If you’re concerned about how lighting up your home impacts on your pocket and natural resources, then you probably have thought about the impact of commercial buildings, be they shopping malls or corporate head offices.

At Standard Bank Group we’re always thinking about what this means to the planet’s resources.

Back in the late 1980s when we put up the first building in our head office complex in Johannesburg, South Africa, we were thinking ‘energy efficiency’.

We’re now re-evaluating our whole electrical infrastructure and replacing inefficient lighting in all our branches and offices around the world. In one branch alone we’ve managed to reduce daily energy consumption for lighting from 1650W to just 165W.

Also underway in South Africa is the CBD lighting replacement project, in which we’re encouraging other businesses to become more environmentally responsible. This project will see up to 40-million lights in commercial buildings like our own across South Africa by the end of December 2011. We’re doing this by providing special finance.

By working with other companies we reduce carbon footprints and help path the way to sustainable, cleaner energy alternatives for all.
