Teachers are the foundation of economic growth and...
Research has consistently demonstrated that education in the early childhood and foundation phases of schooling is crucial in providing the basis for all learning throughout life.
UNESCO’s theme for the 2018 World Teachers’ Day on 5 October is “the right to education means the right to a qualified teacher.”
Teachers have such an important role in society, that it makes sense to ensure their skills and knowledge are constantly refreshed and updated. Continued teacher development is reflected in positive learner outcomes, with learners better equipped for the workplace and adult life.
Education is the primary focus of Standard Bank’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) strategy. We believe that quality education is critical to achieving social and economic growth. We, therefore, focus on creating sustainable interventions that support education at different levels, through programmes that include the development and continual learning and support of teachers.
In 2017, Standard Bank South Africa invested R5.5 million in Edupeg, a non-Governmental organisation (NGO) that delivers learner and teacher support in literacy and numeracy in 27 schools across four provinces in South Africa.
Edupeg’s team of highly skilled and experienced teacher-mentors visits primary schools to mentor teachers in their classrooms. They use teaching techniques from the “Teach like a Champion” methodology to develop and support teachers in the challenging environments in which they work and to instil excellent teaching practice in their classrooms.
Stanbic Bank Uganda, in partnership with Ka Tutandike Uganda, supports vulnerable communities through the Ggaba Market Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Bunga. The facility, which was constructed and furnished by Stanbic Bank Uganda, has the capacity to support up to 40 children per day. The facility provides quality day-care services for young children from families working in the nearby Ggaba market area and a clean, safe and healthy environment in which they can receive a high-quality pre-school education.
Standard Bank is committed to supporting and transforming the lives of people in our communities through our CSI programmes and, in particular through our focus on education. We continuously seek to identify innovative and sustainable initiatives that have a positive impact and enable communities to benefit in the long term.
