The journey of mentoring with Edufundi
Community Coordinator

The global pandemic has given a new appreciation of teachers, with many parents homeschooling at different points during the lockdown.

Edufundi has been supporting parents through the challenges of home-schooling with the #EdufundiAtHome Teach like a Champion video series. Each video has been created in English, isiXhosa and isiZulu, making homeschooling more fun, engaging and successful.

Prior to the lockdown, Edufundi was supporting teachers and learners in under-resourced primary schools across South Africa. Their mission aims to unlock the potential of our children by promoting quality education in primary schools through teacher mentorship and support.

Last year Edufundi delivered the Teach Like a Champion programme to 290 teachers in 44 schools across the Eastern Cape (10 schools), Gauteng (5 schools), KwaZulu-Natal (9 schools) and Western Cape (20 schools), indirectly reaching 14 818 learners across the four provinces.

The focus of Edufundi is towards the empowerment of teachers and school leaders (educational fundis). This approach is based on the realisation that giving teachers and school leaders intensive support to enable them to become confident and competent educators will make a significant and lasting impact on the learners with whom they interact.

The use of Edufundi’s techniques appears to have had the greatest impact on learner behaviour and engagement, which is by far the most significant theme that emerged from comments by mentees, deputies and principals.

At Standard Bank, we understand that to drive Africa’s growth this depends on her people having access to quality education, skills training and life-long learning opportunities.

In South Africa, we focus our investment in education, with the objective of contributing to social and economic transformation in South Africa through supporting the development of future-fit children who are ready for a new world of work.

The particular focus of our strategy is on early childhood development and foundation phase education. In 2019, we spent R83.6 million on education initiatives, about 74% of our total CSI budget of R113.6 million. We kept our operational costs to 4.4% of total budget, ensuring that the large majority of spending goes directly to beneficiaries.

Edufundi is one of these beneficiaries and we have long standing relationship with them since 2014. This CSI initiative aims to support and benefit the communities in which we operate while demonstrating our value and local relevance.

Recently we have been supporting Edufundi’s #EdufundiAtHome series, supporting their efforts to provide educational material for parents, caregivers and teachers. Read more here: https://edufundi.org.za/

This is a really useful service! I would love to participate in this program. I love helping children with their studies. My nephew went to college and left home to attend college in another state and live on campus. We are very worried about him and always try to help him with college assignments. For example, now he has problems with writing assignments, he received a low score on essays. Does anyone know how you can improve his writing skills?

In order to improve your nephew's writing skills, he needs to practice writing essays as much as possible and also I can advise you to find different articles, for example, how to write a strong conclusion and here https://wr1ter.com/how-to-write-a-good-conclusion is a link with an explanation. It really helps to learn more tricks in order to make the text more interesting and informative, and to understand what paragraphs your text should consist of and in what way it is better to write it.
