We believe business has an important role to play in greening our economy.
Which is why we’re excited that Standard Bank Group was named South Africa’s greenest company in the 2012 Newsweek Green Rankings. We were also ranked 21 globally in the Financial Sector category and 64 overall.
Companies on each of the US 500 and Global 500 lists are ranked by their overall Green Score. This is derived from three component scores: environmental impact, environmental management, and environmental disclosure, weighted at 45%, 45%, and 10% respectively.
All scores are out of a possible 100, Standard Bank Group’s overall green score was 71.7, with our environmental impact scoring 81.6, environmental management 58.7 and environmental disclosure 86.4.
How does this compare to the greenest on the globe, Santander Brazil, a division of Banco Santander? This is how they scored: Green Score 85.7; Environmental Impact 88.5; Environmental Management 88.4; and Disclosure: 61.5
Other South African-based companies included in the rankings were MTN, Bidvest and Sasol.
