Standard Bank Group is doing its part to try and help reduce the level of energy consumption in South Africa. Two years ago, the bank went into a partnership that has changed the lives of many South Africans.
We started buying carbon credits from a company that installs solar energy water heaters. With the Solar Academy of Sub-Saharan Africa (SASSA), we have installed more than 85,000 solar water heaters across South Africa.
To install solar water heaters, local people from low-income communities are trained as plumbers and then used by the installation teams when installing and maintaining the heaters. The maintenance programme is largely funded by carbon credit revenues made available by Standard Bank.
