Jazz is about to step into the future at the Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz. With the help of Ocupod, an egg-shaped futuristic pod that immerses the viewer in a 360-degree, high-definition experience never seen before, we allow fans to get closer to the music.

The pod is integrated with a Virtual Reality headset powered by Oculus, which will take viewers “into” a recent performance at the Orbit Jazz club in Johannesburg by Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz winner Nduduzo Makhathini. The video was shot by Standard Bank using a unique trigger camera. Users will be able to step into the video and navigate themselves around the band’s performance using a track ball and pedals. It even takes the experience a step further through the integration of Motion Tracking technology.

The comfy units each house a set of speakers that, coupled with the pod’s design, create a bubble for the user where external noise is cancelled. This groundbreaking technology ensures sounds come streaming at the listener from every direction, but gives them the power to zoom into or hone in on particular sections within the 360-degree soundscape.

Some of those who have experienced the Ocupod feel that the virtual reality version is even better than the live event. This is an exciting new collaboration that brings music and technology together, pushing the boundaries of the experience that live jazz can offer through this brand-new technology. Nduduzo Makhathini’s music takes audiences to another dimension through a fully immersive experience that engages most of the human senses.

Audiences will be able to experience Nduduzo Makhathini’s recording like never before in one of eight Ocupods at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, which takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 24 to 26 September.
