We drop banking-app data charges for our customers-on-the-move.

Known for making our customers’ lives easier through our world-class digital innovations, we’re now giving you, even more reason to smile with the news that from this month, there will be zero-rated data charges on our popular mobile banking app!

Following an agreement with all major network operators in South Africa, our customers will no longer be charged for data when using the Standard Bank app, no matter the network they’re on. According to our Head of Digital Banking and eCommerce, Mr. Vuyo Mpakoone of the drawbacks of using an app and its related features is data charges. But, as we committed to enabling our customers to achieve their next by expanding our mobile and digital offerings, it was obvious that our next step had to be further improving user experience by dropping those added costs, thus giving our customers greater access to mobile banking solutions and hopefully allowing them to save a little extra in these tough times.

Designed to be intuitive, efficient and reliable, our banking app for mobile devices lets users open, access and manage accounts on the go; make payments; check balances, and view accounts. What’s more, customers can change ATM limits; stop a lost or stolen card and get a new card delivered to a preferred branch; submit homeowners’ insurance claims with photos, and manage car loans. Efficiencies are continuously added to limit the time our clients spend banking online, such as the Balance Peek feature, which allows users to view balances without signing in, link the app to their Apple Watch to check balances, activate cards for international travel, sign into the app on an iPhone using Touch ID, view UCount balances and even search for nearby ATMs, branches and Caltex outlets.

Our digital journey will not stop with these recent data-price drops; we will continue to innovate to ensure our customers can essentially manage their entire financial lives on the app via one access point: “Standard Bank is not standing still when it comes to driving digital innovation as a core part of our future strategy,” Mr. Mpako says. “Our mobile traffic is already growing 100% a year and enhancing mobile solutions will become even more integral in the future as we enable our customers to tap into next-generation services and solutions.”
