We’re 19th on list of World’s Greenest Banks

Standard Bank Group has been listed 19th on Bloomberg's list of The World's Top 20 Greenest Banks 2014. We’re the only Africa-based financial services group on the list.

We take great care to reduce our impact on the environments where we operate, especially Africa where we are most active.

As a financial services group, our impacts on society and the environment can be both indirect, arising from the activities of those whom we finance or provide products and services to, and direct, from our day-to-day operational activities.

We have developed systems and processes to reduce our environmental footprint and we track and manage energy, water, carbon emissions and waste. We have continued to improve the rigour of our data collection for all environmental indicators and increase the scope of measurement.

Africa is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and water scarcity. We continue to identify what the potential risks and impacts of this global challenge are; and then take steps to reduce the risks wherever possible.

Africa’s growth remains largely based on natural resources. With few exceptions, the top three exports by most African countries are all natural resources. Our customer base includes the companies that work with these resources, as well as the individuals who depend on them for economic survival. We work closely with them to ensure that they are using their resources in the most responsible way possible.

What impacts our customers, ultimately impacts us. Full details of how we’re working to be a greener bank, see www.standardbank.com/sustainability.
