Weekly cinema trips have helped matric learners improve marks.

Youth Start Foundation is a leading matric maths and science revision programme, created by Primestars to help to prepare matric learners in under-resourced schools to excel in their final examinations.

In the programme students watch presenters explain concepts and go through exam questions on the big screen, while also being given access to textbooks and past papers. The 10-week programme aims to help matric students that may have fallen behind due to the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, to get back on track for their final exams.

Education experts have personally witnessed the success of the programme. Through the years, there’s been feedback from headmasters, from heads of department, from maths teachers and from the learners themselves saying how well the programme has helped them do in mathematics and science.

In previous years, Primestars would fill cinemas to capacity with students, however, due to Covid-19 and social distancing restrictions this has limited 50 students per cinema. Previously transport was arranged for 60 learners, these days they can only carry a maximum of 23. In addition, they now need to provide visors and sanitizer to the learners.

To help carry the additional costs Primestars is appealing to corporates to support the programme in a movement called,  #Savingtheclassof2020. Currently major funding comes from commercial sponsors including Standard Bank.

At Standard Bank, we understand that to drive Africa’s growth thus depends on her people having access to quality education, skills training and life-long learning opportunities.

A majority of our CSI efforts are focussed on investment in education, with the objective of contributing to social and economic transformation through supporting the development of youth that are future-fit and ready for work in the new world.
