World Tuberculosis Day: 24 March 2011
Standard Bank Team
Super Contributor

Tuberculosis (TB) is a pandemic that has taken the world by storm and has claimed the lives of too many people. Standard Bank recognises the importance of generating awareness and educating the population about this disease.

Tuberculosis kills one person every 20 seconds – nearly 4 700 people every day. Everyone is susceptible to the disease – young, old, even adults in the prime of their lives.

The World Health Organization estimates that one third of the world’s population is infected with this highly contagious disease; many are unaware that they even have it. TB can lay dormant in the body for years, the immune system merely restraining and not destroying it.

The first step to beating this disease is through awareness and education, the second being proper treatment. TB doesn’t have to be fatal. By educating communities, prevention becomes possible; and with proper treatment, TB becomes curable.

Standard Bank Group has partnered with many organisations in the fight against TB, HIV and Malaria. Through their involvement in community activities, Africa is one step closer to keeping these major diseases under control. We have“Wellness Champions” who are staff members that volunteer as peer educators in the communities in which they live and work. We have champions in every country in Africa in which we operate.
