Youth band recordings

Every year, youth bands who travel to Makhanda to take part in the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival have the opportunity to present a short performance of their jazz to their peers, either as part of the official performance programme or in workshop settings. This year, with the festival online, we are able to broaden that opportunity all around the country and are happy to have youth bands (maximum age 26) submit a recording of themselves for possible inclusion in the online festival. The best recordings will be showcased as part of the festival, allowing the world to see what our young jazz musicians around the country are creating.Blog Image 1.png

Good recordings are complicated and time-consuming – and sometimes expensive – to make, so follow our guidelines carefully, especially with regard to the look of the video and the clarity of the sound. It is better to have a short performance that is powerful and good, and it is possible that you may need to record repeatedly to get to the quality you need.

  • We are looking for quality recordings for flighting on the NAF’s main online portal as well as on other platforms with a wide reach. Your recording will have national – even international - reach and should be tight audio and visual product.
  • Make sure the lighting is clear enough for an audience to be able to see the musicians. Keep the light in front of musicians, for instance, and not behind.
  • Cheaper microphones – especially on some phones – distort if you play too close to them. Test different settings and distance from the mic to achieve the optimum sound.
  • The recording should run between 5 & 30 minutes. Preferably keep it short, trimmed to your best pieces.
  • Short spoken intros are optional.
  • Audience presence (with social distancing) is optional but does enhance the vibe.
  • Videos should be MP4 format in high definition ranging from 5 minutes to 30 minutes.
  • Although we can't guarantee your recording a place in the program we aim to include as many as we can.
  • Terms and conditions apply.

Where to submit your recordings and enquiries:

Once you have completed your recording please send these through to Matthew Boon: [email protected]

The closing date is 25 June 2021.

The Eastern Cape Jazz Promotions team will advise successful applicants via mail by 10 July 2021.

We look forward to seeing your talent shine!
