Credit Cards Budget

Hi.
Please advise me on how this facility works with regards to the full amount. I settled student account and elected the 6 month budget option and the FULL AMOUNT was deducted from my credit card and maxed it out! I would not have made the payment this way had I known this would be the case, I would use another method and another account.
