I had a similar problem, and it is very, very annoying. Enough for me to leave Standard Bank, since I now cannot set up a beneficiary or make a payment using only FNB's universal code - it rejects the account number and prevents me setting up the beneficiary, after entering OTP. You are forced to use the universal branch code... which doesn't always work.

The universal brance code is not accepted and so decline the setup of the beneficiary. After the OTP has bin submitted.

You do not need to fill in the branch/branch code. The app makes use the the universal branch code.
