banks rallied due to "short covering" according to a fin24 article.. basically profit taking for the guys that were short

All the banks have bounced back a little it could be shorts taking profits or it could be longs seeing value in either case imo good news as it is a good sign that some/many believe banks have bottomed and we may be reaching a turning point may it last!! Will be nice to see retailers especially credit retailers doing something similiar as confirmation.
