Africa gold rush propels mergers

AUSTRALIA'S second-biggest gold producer, Lihir Gold, has joined the African gold rush through its $1.1billion friendly bid for Perth-based Equigold, and plans to build a significant position in West Africa by looking to buy out smaller miners.
