Portfolios worth over R500 000 etc etc it would be interesting to know how people managed to raise so much cash over the years. Was it a sale of a property, savings??

I spend less than I earn. Always have. Hopefully always will. But my portfolio is way below your threshold

Saved 20% of my salary, no matter what (lived on bread and water sometimes) Used that to start a business. Invested the profits in fixed deposits etc. Started buying shares every month. and 20 years later you have a decent portfolio

I don't quite have your threshold either but a big contributor for me was to keep driving my car once I had paid it off. This freed up R5000 a month.

haha.. I'M KIDDING!!! But thanks momo, some sound advice. How can learning about shares be a waste of money? If I was gambling I would've closed some positions, open and close open and close ten times a day.I've had my position for 2 weeks on AGL and it'll take a while but I'll reap the rewards. Some of my other positions we're bought in March and that can stay there for my kids one day.Everyone is so hostile around here.Just chilax..

Got one for you - started off with R2million portfolio now worth R750k hows that :-) Just kidding -build up over the past 3 years with smaller caps (MRF, SIM, MML, PET, etc). Took profits and re-invested into other stocks, repeated and whammy over the years sitting with a decent size portfolio.

Better you get tested here than in the market...We have seen people come and go so many times before.. its not the deapth of your pockets its the strength in your head that determines if you make it.

That's a fact John. It's the greed combined with fear that makes so many people vanish isn't it.The deeper their pockets the greedier they get. This place is one step away of a casino.Trust me,I'll be here for longer than the market can remain irrational ;) I like all of you too much!

Made a killing on the sale of property, wisely invested pension payments, drove a paid up car. Married a good businessman, have a great career :) Lucky me :)I guess the REAL key, always spend less than you make, learn to hate gambling, and steer clear of clothing accounts and credit card spending sprees.

Always spent less than I earned. Paid myself first (invested/saved first) AND ONLY THEN spent the rest. Happy with the results thus far.

Yip agree with you all. Need to accumulate wealth on a continuous basis. The first thing u should do with the salry, is remove your savings portion. There are many ways to accumulate, if you own a prperty and receive rent, you are generating fixed passive income, as well as the capital appreciation of property. There are different vehicles to save and accumulate, its good to diversify among the asset classes (stocks, bonds, propery). Oh and one more thing, cars are not included in your portfolio of assets, they are depreciating assets :)
