When does one get the full exposure amount when trading in R/$ futures?

when ?? when you enter, but you won't get the currency in hard notes .. settled in Rands only ..

Has OST done a currency futures course in the past... I know its not offered now.

We've entered already and went long on the $. We understand the tachnical aspects of the currency futures and we know of variation margins, but what happens when we sell before the contract expires(when the market favours us), do we get the full amount we are exposed to?

ah, they did once or twice .. but no not any more .. albeit I don't know about plans ..

your profit/loss are processed daily as part of the variation margin.
