Why is currency futures so much more expensive to trade compared to index futures? Maybe not per contract, but when you compare per exposure level or per initial margin requirement?

depends which contracts you are trading and on what platform. Currency futures on a South African platform is a waste of time and money- trying to trade ZAR pairs equally so. You need to be in highly liquid markets where you are not being hit with reserve bank rules or currency translations.
