they've maintianed a good dividend history for the last couple of years paying out bi-annually... see no reason why they've been beaten down so much lately, possibly the baltic dry index? i think this is a value entry...good company

consensus is for div to halve .. an not sayig not vvalue, just saying div was from boom times, those times are gone for now ..

The directors have been grabbing options at 239c and dumping them like they have the pox. I know Werner likes it but I'm not touching it until it's much lower than it is now, or I see directors putting their own cash into it.

Have to say i have a bad feeling about GND. Currently they trade on about a pe of 5 which is pretty low, but with earnings being halved, the pe is probably closer to 9, which is on a par with GND in the boom years. I have the same observation as Richard, when directors started dumping stock in massive amounts at the R17 mark, i got nervous and exited my positions.

On a 5 to 10 year view i dont think you can go wrong in a company like GND, sure they have had a bad year or 2 (who hasnt in the past few years)they are heavily geared towards the baltic index which over the next few years should pick up consideribly with with chinas importing plans.

Its no good having a high index, debt free shipping and owning the harbours if spoornet are preventing you opening your own railway to feed your ships and failing to modernise and expand there own !!! sorry for this rational remark i could not think of a joke.....

Apparently GND ordered a fleet of new ships at the top of the market and is now taking delivery. Needless to say, she will have to find a way to utilize this extra capacity to pay for these.

my understanding .. they ordered before the top, but they arroved around the top .. point is they got them at previous years sales, so they have capacity, bbut at a cheap price ..

yip, they didnt buy at the top of the market, that is against their business strategy - if i remember correctly... i think one mustnt expect the unexpected, the world economy was and still is under pressure, shipping has scaled back drastically and many shipping companies are far worse off than GND, GND is actually one of the better performing and managed companies in the world. so one must be patient with this one, but i am sure in the next few years they will recover and gain ground again, its what they always did. the key is patience and buying at a low price will help you make more money down the line... i hold for the long term 5-10+ years. the world will grow again and shipping is a key to economic growth, no other way to transport dry bulk than ship and train, and trains dont go overseas...

In agreement. It probably has not bottomed yet, but a great pick and hold share over medium to long term.

A lot of good sense written here but sadly as theyoungster did not enter a share code, the thread will soon be lost forever. Most subjects end up this way. Simon cant we have some system where a share code or the like must be included? If you look at the forum very few discussions do.

Has the ongoing wave of piracy, which seems to have spread from Straits of Malacca to north of Seychelles and Somalia, had any effect on their costs - insurance, security etc?

It looks to me like there was a rising wedge formation on GND since about a year back. Breakout occured a few weeks back. Possible correction to 1260c.Thoughts?
