I recently met, through friends a young lady(22) who came top of her class studing Human genetics BSC(Med) Honours at UCT.. she has been accepted into Oxford to study Clinical Embreology(one of only 16 students world wide to be accepted on the course) And unless she get the funding needed she will have to decline. I have taken it upon myself to do what I can to raise this money (55 ooo pounds) because I really believe that we have to help the young bright minds where we can. Please let me know if any of you have any ideas, funds or access to a corperate who might be able to help. Thanks John

There are hundreds of bright young minds in this country who cant afford basic university education at a fraction of your cost(55 ooo pounds!)for more basic jobs like medicine, housing and education....the need for an embryologist at a cost of 55 ooo pounds is not urgent!

For once can we look toward outstanding achievment and excerlence rather than this nonsense of the lowest common denominator...PLEASE!

Gonna cost her a lot more than 55k pounds I think, you haven't factored in living costs yet! But seriously John, she should easily qualify for a study loan from one of the overseas lending institutions. Check out HSBC. I did my masters overseas (paid the hard way - thanks to the dot com boom) but many of my class mates were exchange studends on international study loans. The interest rate repayments are close to nothing - like 1 or 2%. Only thing is she can forget about trying to pay it off by working back in SA. I will check with some of my old classmates to see how they went about it.

Interesting John. You have a very unpopular opinion on matters. BUT I must agree. The future lies in the hands of the "special few" not in educating the masses. That is all about feeding and breeding and breathing; that will happen regardless. This race to mediocrity (and lower) is a tragedy.

You are kidding (right??). In which case ... Sieg Heil!

Nope! The endless education bills will do nothing to uplift society. What we are living through now is a symptom of this approach. We seem to have confused "a training" with an education. You can train a million technicians, they still won't amount to a single genius. The point is that genius is rare and must be coveted not ignored and diluted to a mass-level. In this country we even adopted OBE in terms of which nobody can really fail. So why test people in the first place. As for Sieg Heil - way, way, way... off the mark. In fact the nazi (small "n") regime was socialist and originally supported a system of training/education not unlike the one in this country - ie. the masses assumed control and drove out the intellectual class. AND - the intellectuals tend to be the most liberal and enlightened class in a society.

OK, well that is a better way of putting your point across, and point taken (and agreed with to some extent). You have to admit that your phrasing in your previous point was a bit .... controversial perhaps.

Well, given that the market is directionless (down maybe - but I never short,) I am back on this chat forum due to the resultant boredom. So, a few barbs - to stir up a discussion - seemed like a good idea.

I too never short - except Index futures, which is an entirely different strategy. I hold to the theory that markets are inherently biased on the bull side, which is where the best percentage gains can be found

so it seems that unless you embrace this unrelenting race to the bottom and mindless mediocrity you may just be branded a white supremacist/nazi...some obviously rather prefer to be united in collective stupidity? Juju will be proud...

They are scientists - they advance knowledge and understanding. Forget this "job" thing. As for what "we" do with the knowledge we gain from their work - well unfortunately - that will be in the hands of those fine upstanding politicians that run our lives. In China they would use the the info to control populations to the downside - in South Africa we will no doubt use said knowledge to encourage further breeding. Why not? We already pay people to have babies because, as we all know, votes are more important than quality of life.

See Skaaptjop - it worked! We have a lively debate going here. Much more fun than discussing shares with neophytes who have no background in the field and no knowledge of the markets. Now that comment will start a whole new argument about how those of us with financial qualifications owe it to the masses to bring them up to speed. And this ties in with this current thread.

Talking about the elephant in the room which this article in yesterday's BD also conveniently ignores...but it nevertheless made for delectable reading - the second "challenge" is particularly hilarious! A toxic combination of cadre deployment, entitlement and sloth...http://www.businessday.co.za/articles/Content.aspx?id=145626

Ask her previous uni, they will have a bursary department, a very few are aimed at students studying at prestigious uni overseas, and if she is as talented ext I doubt they will not help, that will help her in paying for her studies, or part of it..or if she could find a company in her field of study she can ask them, usually they will ask that you work of the amount..ie holiday and after study.. many options just be pro active!best of luck to her!
