Are there any other waste companies listed on the JSE from which to make a comparrison? The only one that comes to mind is Enviroserv, in which Bidvest has a 28% stake, although one can never really see its true performance due to its relatively small part in the big scheme of Bidvest. From business involvement with Enviroserv I would say that they are a good and profitable business, with good growth potential. There are alays some limitations in this industry, especially if the businesses don't own their own dump sites. Many of these are municipality owned and therefore the full value of the waste cycle is not realised by the Waste Management company itself. Enviroserv have their own dumps, which aids them in profitability - does Inter-waste have their own? If so, where are they situated?

ABuzz, I don't think they own sites. Havn't read all 122 pages of the prospectus as yet but I have copied some info into here. Municipalities, mining houses and utility corporations own and operate in excess of 750 small, medium and large landfill sites in South Africa. Only about 10% of the available market is operated to acceptable standards set by the DWAF in their Minimum Requirements for Waste Disposal by Landfill. The inability of local authorities to operate and manage waste disposal facilities together with the lack of expertise in the country makes every landfill site in South Africa a prospect and an opportunity for the Interwaste group. South Africa is currently formulating its National Waste Bill, which is expected to enforce generators of waste to manage their waste according to the hierarchy of waste management in a sustainable way. Industry will have to avoid, minimise, re-use, recycle, treat and dispose of their waste as a last resort. The Waste Management Bill and Waste Information System will place immense pressure on owners of landfill sites to operate, control and rehabilitate these facilities to Minimum Required standards. Illegal landfill sites will be closed down and properly constructed and engineered sanitary landfills will be developed. This will create a huge opportunity for the Interwaste group. A further strategy of Enviro-Fill is to expand the activities of the business which includes converting waste to energy, construction of landfill sites, waste materials recovery projects and composting. Enviro-Fill is in the process of identifying suitable land for the establishment of a G:L:B landfill facility which will improve the profitability of the business in future years.
