Russ - VOD must close above R120 for potential H&S to play out - short term target R126 medium term R137

Im sure Im in the wrong about this and all of you will make your money on VOD or MTN, but Im just really struggling to invest in telecomms, I think its the price wars really stopping me.

Most techies I know are still complaining about the prices, considering how cheap data is overseas I just see our prices getting reduced, theres new competition and voice revenue is on the decline as everybody moves to data (like Whatsapp and Skype).
Personally I took my money and invested somewhere else, mostly in food and investment firms really.

Well techies will complain about the price until it is free and then they'll complain about the quality of the service. I've been to the USA this year and their cell plans (contract or prepaid) are not cheap. For one thing in the US they quote / advertise prices before tax, here all prices have to include VAT by law so that explains 14%. In the US you might pay for and get 1000 minutes but those minutes are also used up for incoming calls not just outgoing calls. On prepaid it costs you money to receive calls i.e. they do not have a "sender pays" model. The Rand is probably over valued versus the dollar at the current exchange rate. So factor that into the comparison. Coverage does not seem as good either e.g. some places you'll have coverage from only one operator and because they use completely different technologies e.g. CDMA versus GSM you can't roam across networks. I doubt most people factor any of this into their comparisons of oranges versus pineapples but instead look only at the "sticker price".

largely I agree, trend is that data becomes a utility and voice disappears (it's all just data) .. they'll sell tons of bytes a very very cheap prices and low margins .. hence I prefer MTN over VOD as they have more markets in which to wriggle ..

I selected MTN for the reasons Simon mentioned. As rates are reduced, more users will take up the offer, which would result into more revenue. Now multiply that revenue with all the countries MTN operates in

Simon, i watched your show with David Shapiro and the other guy from momentum. Very informative. My wife commented that David always has the naughty look on his face. I enjoyed the humour. Well done.

I see kids at prep school, teenagers through to adults with cell phones glued to their ears, and little fingers tapping away at apps. So long as VOD and MTN are managed correctly, surely this is a growth space? Or is this a too simplistic view. For the record I hold both and have done well out of both.
