Brokerage is 0.5% or a minimum of R50 per trade.0.5% of R10000 is R50.Therefore R10000 is the amount where 0.5% and R50 overlap. If you buy less than that the brokerage remains R50 but is now greater than 0.5% of the trade amount. The less you buy(under R10000) the greater your brokerage becomes percentage-wise.If you buy shares for only R1000 the brokerage is still R50 which is now 20%.Your share thus has to go up 20% before you are in profit. However you will again pay brokerage when you sell so you need your share to go up about double that before you sell at a profit. In my view you should buy for R10000 or more.(I have ignored strate fee which is a minimum of R10.92 per trade).
