Unfortuanately the US 'democracy' doesn't quite work like that. Its not necessarily the person with the most votes that win. Certain states get more weight to their votes. Look at Bush .... he had less votes and still ended up winning.

OK. how does this work though, some states have higher rankings, are these the states with higher university graduates, etc?

the larger a states population the more votes they have in the electroal college. More or less. Then some states vote in proportion tot he votes received, but most vote their block to the states winner. So very possible that one gets more votes but losses the election.
