Well, a recetion (sic) normally frightens people into selling all their shares and hide the money in trunks under their beds. Then they buy dictionaries to figure out what the hell just happened...

A recession will keep a number of big investors out hte market, for as long as economist consensus disagrees on how long it will last. As soon as consensus forecasts start to paint a rosier future, then the sideline money will start to climb in again. However, as to what percentage of the total market that is, and how to measure it, I don't know. Remember also that a lot of unit trusts and pension funds policies dictate how much they are supposed to stay invested in the market.
