Spent 6 hours on the phone trying to get a card cancelled. Tried honey. Tried venom. All incompetent and no assistance. Eventually went into my branch (that talked me into the silly thing in the first place.) After a "chat" - they cancelled it. NOW - a year later - it has resurfaced. 2 hours on the phone this morning with people who have never even heard of the product and put the phone down if they - don't approve of your tone? There is simply No Service. The sooner banking goes fully online and this bureaucratic sillinesses that pose as businesses go south, the better. And I have a fair wad of assets with the institution in question.

Agree. When I went to close my current account at Standard Bank the guy said he would give me better rates for the service...I replied that the horse has alredy bolted and why no proactiveness et al. Investec which costs a little more provides a better and much more secure banking service.

Time-synchronized one-time passwords Time-synchronized one-time passwords change constantly at a set time interval, e.g. once per minute. To do this some sort of synchronization must exist between the client's token and the authentication server. For disconnected tokens this time-synchronization is done before the token is distributed to the client

Standard bank has OTP's too? And Threshold, Standard Bank customer service is pretty poor, I agree. I have accounts at STB, ABSA and my wife at FNB. Standard Bank the biggest headache, for sure.

Investec Oz, bank card with a button you push to run the green numbers like a one-arm-bandit, quite fun. Once new number comes up, insert into password line and Voila! Yip, quite fancy and clever I thought.

I have tried a few banks and Investec definitly the best, so been with them for just over 5 years now. i do however prefer the share trading facility used by SBK, hence my involvement with OST..

Wonder how difficult it would be to a) call MTN or Vodacom - request a call divert on my victim's phone to a new SIM which b) I have falsely RICA'd - and then c) hack into someone's online banking platform. Part C is easy - it has been dome many times. Part b is a doddle too. So that leaves part A as the trick. Now the real question is, how would you get away with it - because you can only transfer money into another account, which would be traceable

Stop complaining - try banking in France where most transactions are still done by cheque not to mention trying to draw money from a bank other than your own branch. On the up side they allow dogs in the managers office

Have a heart - France is socialist! SA, on the other hand, is social-less.

At Capitec I earn 4.1% or 6% (less than R10k in your account) on my savings account, make use of a simple usable internet platform and pay R 2.75 for per debit order, R2.50 for an electronic payment, nothing for drawing cash from a range of retailers when buying something else from them, and a monthly admin fee of R4.50 and internet is free. Use of my debit card costs nothing and it's internationally accepted. My interest covers all my banking costs on monthly bases. I save in excess of R2000 on banking charges on an annual basis. That's all that matters to me.

Kwagga, sounds like a win, if you travel beyond SA borders and need to phone their call centre, how competent are the staff?

AJT I agree Investec does cost a bit more but it offers great service, good security and as a bonus you get very hot personal bankers to help you out :) I stopped banking at SBK several years ago after a bank manager could not help me stop a fictitious debit order coming of my account. So after weeks of trying to get help I closed the account. I've still not been reimbursed for the amount taken off my account. If you are unhappy with service levels write to Jaco and/or Sim and close your account. This approached worked with my wife at Nedbank, where her issues were sorted out within days.

I quite like SBK. Been banking there for 34 years and they have actually been good and helpful since student days.

Been banking there for only 25 years. They have been getting worse at an accelerating rate. At this stage I am still wating for their staff to phone back as they promised - because this time it would be "different." Well at least they are consistent. What a joke.
