Out of interest, how do you guys go about selecting shares? Do you concentrate on a specific sector and get to know the shares in that sector inside out or do you select shares across sectors as they catch your eye from articles / top mover lists etc.?

This is my new approach. It is far less stressful - you are relieved of the burden of all that research.

Rubbish man - we all know you have a dartboard - with Kumba in the bulls eye - and beer goggles to ensure that you never hit it.

Jokes aside - have you seen how my picks are doing. I am quite chuffed, for a change. Especially in this miserablle market. I really must start trading on the short side.

one of the greatest traders in the world - Gerard Apfel - said that he hardly ever shorts a market. His argument being that markets are inherently biased to the long side

I absolutely agree - but... the counter argument is that if you are a "slick" trader (which I am not,) the velocity of downward moves puts the upticks in the shade. You HAVE to take your profits though; or in the long run the market will catch up with you (the bias of which you speak/write.)

The share must be liquid and must have a reasonable Price/Earning Ratio and must have an element of being defensive.
