Fixed line is stone age yes, but in South Africa wireless services is not all that successful either, thinking of the continual line drops and interrupted internet connections on MTN and Vodacom packages for fixed installations. It may still be ok for mobile purposes but ADSL is far superior for a fixed installation. It may be the reason Telkom is still surviving since each ADSL line also provide call, fax and other data services. Our country with its densly populated areas is just not suitable for total wireless service due to limited bandwidth. Fixed line will stay for a long time to come, just like cable TV elsewhere. Telkom probably realised that and it may even be the reason for the massive upgrading of ADSL service performance recently. Let them have good management and we can see a share price shooting for the heavens. Are we going to miss the boat?

But what is the reach of ADSL? Do you find it in the entire of soweto? What about illegal settlements? I bet you, if you walk into a shack you will find 5 working phones or at the taxi rank everyone has a cellphone. The nice part about it is that this people are on a high price premium of prepaid R2 something per minute. Talk about whatsapp which is heavy on data usage, the mobile guys are still happy because the users don't even have cheap data bundles. They take it neat at R2/mb. The business is lying in mobile industry in South Africa

What you say is very true and also amazing that these people are prepared to pay that kind of money for cell/wireless services. That is probably a great part of the survival (and riches) of the cell co's. But do not underestimate ADSL. It reaches into almost every home and is certainly the primary technology driving commerce, including the associated voice lines. Telkom is just too big to disappear. Yes, nobody in his right mind will invest in Telkom at this point in time but by what ever means Telkom is getting back on it's feet, a golden opportunity may or will be in the pipeline. Mark my words.

Is Vodacom entering the ADSL market using Telkom fixed lines? How long has this been going on? Did Vodacom realise that wireless services is after all not the ultimate answer for SA? Will participation in ADSL services by Vodacom and possibly MTN be the survival or demise of Telkom? Telkom becoming an investment opportunity? http://www.vodacom.co.za/personal/internet/broadbandathome/adsl/?pageUrl=/personal/internet/broadban...
