The Worst Budget

The current govt is so set on maintaining it's voter base that it is leading the country to ruin by increasing taxes and inventing new methods of fleecing the productive to support the won't works. Alec Hogg too must have been kicked in the head by one of his horses if he honestly thinks, as he stated in a recent article, that punishing the hard worker by giving his earnings to indolent is a good idea. When will this country learn that each individual MUST be responsible for his own welfare and hand-outs are actually hand-downs, for the individual and ultimately the whole country.

Agreed. It's really starting to look attractive to retire in another country. I didn't think I would ever say this, but this county is getting way too expensive to live in. At least you can see where your tax money is spend in first world countries.

- Yep, the days of the high and affordable living standards in this country are gone. The governments policies are unsustainable and their vote buying penchant of taking from the haves and giving to the have nots is short sighted and headed for disaster.

I wouldnt goto Auz. Too much nanny state. Example. My mate is going there and needs to change the plugs on his appliances. You cant buy plugs there. You have to be a certified electrician to buy and change plugs ... REALLY! Tis sad but true

The noise about leaving the country is so old. Since 1994 the air has been polluted by noise of people who assumes doom and gloom from government. Strangly enough when the economy (pre 1994) was in dire state such threats were never there.

Yah, the solution is (a) either become part of the easy money brigade (gov officials and members of the cader); or (b) focus on the fact that, if you have a "job" (read: are blessed with a position to generate an income), you have to do all it takes to preserve same (job AND income), whereby you will raise this country's GDP, might even create some more jobs especially for those at the lower end of the earnings chain, and so on. The latter option might just pull our RSA through and demonstrate that talking heads and speaches which are aimed at the dire street masses, will take no one nowhere.

Well, call it what you want and discount the problem all you like, but the fact is that the brain and wealth drain from this country continues unabated and with it the valuable tax paying base. The books will become harder for this govt. to balance and this lateset budget is a sign of things to come.

Budget Sangoma advises via translator - Some see private enterprise as a predatory target to be shot, others as a cow to be milked, but few are those who see it as a sturdy horse pulling the wagon. The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. We Sangomas contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile—hoping it will eat him last.

FACTS: Under the rein of Chris Stals the prime rate was flying around 25%. FACT: Economic growth by "this" government has never been achieved by any other governments in South Africa. More relevant to this topic is Education and Health systems inherited from pre 1994 is in shocking state and investment in those 2 depatments is critical. Let all the true South nAfricans, I mean the patriotic ones see the need to build a united South Africa where we all work to make this country great rather than blaming government for everything

Could it be possible that someone who prefers the other government can see the positive in the current government, like stable economic environment during hostile and volutile world economy, participation of all citizens of the country to economic activities, the high returns on investment as a result of user friendly economic policies? Ohh yes, I almost forgot it is offending to some when they see economic opportunities for ALL South Africans unlike the "good old days" when such previledges were reserved for some. Should we be shocked when such irritation forces them to go to Australia? I guess not

Ya, superstar but in the process of correcting the issues of the past they are now skewing the budget to something that is simply not sustainable. More than 50% of the budget goes to government employees, which now earns 40% more than their much more productive counterparts in the private sector. Trade unions also own politicians in this country, so this situation will get worse every year. No matter how patriotic you are, you must be a very stupid man/woman to support this. This is a tendency that will eventually break the tax payers back in this county at the expense of every man, woman and child in this country. Punishing the rich for being prosperous is counterproductive. They are the wheels and mechanics of this economy. Government shouldnÂ’t even try to create jobs. The unsustainable waste of tax payer money does no one any favours. They should rather focus on making this country an attractive place to invest in. Money wants to be in a happy place, and South Africa is becoming an increasingly unhappy place for any money.

You live in a fools paradise. This government could do 200% better than they are currently doing. If you can't see that, then maybe your standards are just too low.

I dont see opportunities for "all" South Africans. I see both opportunities for "all" South Africans, and opportunities for "black" South Africans. Not that this topic is one of color at all, however your post seem to be leaning toward that way, striker. I think things in SA are pretty good right now, however its the longer term future thats of more concern. If people want to jump ship, then thats their call. There are definitely countries out there that operate extremely more efficiently than SA does, and also provide relatively more opportunity to the man in the street.

- BEE is an Anc creation , that has its roots based purely on skin colour. My children should'nt suffer in the work place based on the colour of their skins ,opposed to their abilities and qualifications. As I said elsewhere, it's about self- preservat

Money in a happy place??? I wonder which is more unhappy place, now or during detain without trial, economic opportunities for white minority only (well and all other opportunities. Money wants to be in a happy place right?? Well then we will all agree that during this rein JSE has performed much better than it did during your "happy" times. Let me translate your "happy" statement this way, non-white government irrespective of what they achieve is not "happy" environment. The combination of Thabo Mbeki, Tito Mboweni and Trevor Manuel that took ALSI from around 9000 points to 32000 points. Well without stable and good government economic policies that would never have happened and your government would not even dream of achieving that with the pressure of providing fair economic opportunities to all

Ofcourse there is always a room for improvement like healthcare system has to improve, education has to improve. The problem you people always have is anything that will benefit the previously and still disavantaged and economically oppressed irritate the old SA tradition
