It basically indicates if a stock is being accumulated or sold...

The idea is that when there is a sideways movement on a share... (i.e. it's not doing much), but the OBV shows an increase, it means that the "smart money" is slowly accumulating stock. It's often/sometimes a good time to buy... the opposite is also true. "Expensive" sideways moving stock could (as in possibly/maybe) indicate a looming plummet. OBV should be used in conjunction with other indicators.

Best example I've ever seen of this was Brait on 26/27 May 2009. Stunningly beautiful! Like clubbing seals. Pity obvious ones like that don't come along more often...
