a company issues nil paid letters (NPL's) to existing share holders that give you the right to buy new shares at a price from the company. These NPL's also trade on the market until expiry.

thanks Simon, but do they notify you or do you have to look for it and apply. If so how do you exercise your options?

well if you own the share at the ldt they will appear in your account. Then you sell them or if you want to take up the rights contact the call center.
