the effect of these on gold shares

To what degree does the Gold price and R/US$ exchange rate have a effect on the price of gold? I noticed the gold price came down 1% today as well as the rand strengthening. It makes sense that this would be worse for the gold companies as they would be receiving less profits from the selling of gold. Does the market take these factors into consideration quite significantly? I bought DRD shares @ 644 today, gone down a bit today as well(would this be because of the factors mentioned above?), how soon can i see a recovery and how long should it take?
