The rand has broken out of a 16 year old triple top pattern with venom. To me the chart looks hideous. I have no interest in this currency - let it strengthen if it will/can - I'll look to accumulate assets in other currencies.

SKAAP - I (and many others like me, Ill wager) find myself on the horns of a dilemma - the USD is overbought and emerging currencies oversold - but I do not trust our government enough to buy Rands - so I would rather forgo the potential profit of a long Rand trade in favour of any other setup available. The risk of something going wrong locally is just too high. Notwithstanding all of the price action over the past 25 years - the Rand has lost 85% of its value! This is not an asset I wish to accumulate. If the Rand were to strengthen appreciably - our market would probably crash. Our commodity producers would break down. Employment would take a new leg to the downside. Banks (after an initial celebratory bump) would swoon on the write-downs. Our industrials would crash due to imported competition. All the while - I am still exposed to the ZAR as I am trapped in substantial holdings in SA small caps, some positional trades in SA platinum miners and AGL - and a fair portfolio of speculative real estate that is oh so slow to move! Needless to say - I lie awake at night!

The bulls are probably feeling quite relaxed at the moment as we have had a nice relief rally (which incidentally I predicted in my post on 24 January 2016 titled "My opinion-viewer discretion is advised").We have now put a little distance between us and that massive support on the alsh at 46000. Just keep an eye on it in the next couple of months because if that breaks we are looking at about 37000 on the alsh. It is a bit worrying that gold, which is a safe haven, is still going from strength to strength and shows no signs of slowing down.

Kwagga/Russ - My Nampak trade is proving to be a rather pleasant one. R16.8 to...BTI has broken out in the UK too - traded through 40 UKP. It doesn't pay to short this kind of company.
