Garth Mackenzie shenanigans

Reading through Garth's TOP40 analysis for yesterday he mentions heavy volume being "most likely as a result of some month end shenanigans". Can anyone shed any light on what these types of shenanigans would be? Possible market manipulation?

Fund and hedge fund managers pushing closing prices up (or down) to window dress their month end results.

they also buy and sell to get instruments off their lists.
For example you report on 01 Oct you have 100 Firstrands and on 01 Nov you have 100 Firstrands.
What they dont see is in between they bought some other stocks in between took them off their books (like eg Lonmin) before having to report to investors.
